Boats and water
Around boats and water, life jackets and the weather forecast matter most.
- Wear a life jacket, with child sizes for children.
- Don't board overloaded or unsound boats.
- Check weather and water warnings; cancel if a storm is coming.
মানিকগঞ্জ
A district of the Padma, Jamuna and Dhaleshwari, just west of Dhaka. The vast Baliati zamindar estate and the old Teota palace are the main draws, and at Aricha and Paturia you see the great rivers at full width. In winter, people come looking for the Hajari gur of Jhitka.

About the seasons: November to February is comfortable for sightseeing, and December–January is date-palm sap and jaggery season. The monsoon brings full rivers, along with bank erosion and more trouble at the ferry ghats.
Regular buses run from Gabtoli in Dhaka along the Dhaka–Aricha highway to Manikganj, Saturia and Paturia.
By car you can cover Baliati and Teota in a day; allow for jams around Savar and Nabinagar.
CNG auto-rickshaws and battery rickshaws connect the highway to the villages. For Baliati, take a rickshaw or auto from Saturia.
Most visitors do it as a day trip from Dhaka. Manikganj town has simple hotels.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

The Aricha and Paturia ghats lie near where the Jamuna meets the Padma. Before the Jamuna Bridge, the road north crossed at Aricha; ferries still run from Paturia to Daulatdia. Sunsets over the wide river are worth staying for.

A sprawling zamindar estate of seven palace blocks across nearly six acres at Baliati, Saturia. It is protected by the Department of Archaeology, and one building houses a small museum.

An old zamindar house at Teota in Shibalaya, fronted by a tall nine-spired temple. It is linked to Kazi Nazrul Islam, who met his future wife Pramila Devi here. The main building is badly decayed.
Sweet
Date-palm jaggery made by a particular method around Jhitka in Harirampur, a tradition about two centuries old that now has GI status. Production is small as date palms decline, so beware of fakes.
Fast buses and lorries use the Dhaka–Aricha highway, so cross with care. Ferries may stop on foggy nights and in storms, leading to long waits at the ghat. Keep back from the edge where riverbanks are eroding.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
