About the seasons: The winter months bring calm rivers and the best forest conditions. May and June are mango season but hot. During the monsoon and cyclone season, coastal travel can be risky.
Direct buses run from Dhaka to Satkhira and Shyamnagar, and there are regular buses from Khulna and Jashore.
There is no railway in Satkhira; take a train to Khulna or Jashore and continue by bus.
The nearest airport is at Jashore.
Buses and hired motorbikes cover the road from town to Shyamnagar. From Munshiganj you need a hired boat into the forest, best arranged through a guide.

An old Kali temple in Ishwaripur village, Shyamnagar, revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It was restored in 2021.
Munshiganj in Shyamnagar is the main jumping-off point for the western Sundarbans. At Kalagachhia, in the Burigoalini range, a boardwalk and watchtower lead into the forest — a manageable day trip.
A mid-nineteenth-century mosque known for its many domes and broad veranda. It sits off the main tourist route, so it is rarely busy.
Local produce
Mud crabs are farmed and caught around coastal Shyamnagar; local eateries serve them in spicy curries.
Fruit
The district is a known mango producer, shipping fruit across the country and abroad; the harvest here starts a little earlier than in much of Bangladesh.
Crocodiles live in the Sundarbans creeks and tigers in the forest: never go into the water or stray from your group. Near the border, follow Border Guard Bangladesh instructions and carry ID. Cancel coastal trips when a cyclone signal is up.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
ATMs are scarce towards Shyamnagar, so carry the cash you need from Satkhira town.
Boat timings follow the tides, so talk to your boatman the day before.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
