খুলনা
Set on the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers, Khulna is the country's third-largest city and the main gateway to the Sundarbans. In town there are Liberation War memorials, the divisional museum and busy river ghats; just outside are Dakshindihi and Pithavog, both tied to Rabindranath Tagore's family. And when food comes up, chui jhal always does too.

About the seasons: Winter is the most comfortable season and also the main Sundarbans season. April and May are hot and humid, and low-lying parts of the city waterlog in the monsoon.
Direct intercity trains run from Dhaka, including over the Padma Bridge rail link, and trains also arrive from Rajshahi and the north.
Buses run throughout the day from Dhaka via the Padma Bridge, with good road links to Jashore, Kushtia and Barishal.
The nearest airport is Jashore, connected to Khulna by road.
Easy-bikes, rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws are easy to find. You can cross the Rupsha by ferry boat from the ghats or by road over the bridge.
The city has hotels at every level, and most Sundarbans groups set off from here. Book ahead in the peak winter season.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

Dish
Chunks of chui vine stem cooked with mutton or beef, giving a hot, aromatic bite. Khulna has many eateries known for it.
Dish
Locally farmed golda prawns cooked in coconut milk — a favourite for special meals.
Do not board overcrowded ferry boats at the ghats. For the Sundarbans, choose only licensed operators whose boats carry life jackets and communication gear, and follow your guide's instructions in tiger and crocodile country.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
