নোয়াখালী
Noakhali's main town is actually Maijdee — the old Noakhali town was lost to river erosion. The district's big draw is Nijhum Dwip, down in the Meghna estuary near Hatiya, where spotted deer roam the keora forest and migratory birds arrive in winter. In the north, Sonaimuri has the Mughal-era Bajra Shahi Mosque and the Gandhi Ashram.

About the seasons: November to February has calm water and the best birding. In the monsoon the Meghna estuary is rough and boat services are disrupted; in cyclone season (April–May, October–November) check warnings before heading to the coast.
Intercity trains run from Dhaka to Noakhali (Maijdee).
Regular buses run from Dhaka and Chattogram to Maijdee and Chowmuhani.
Launches run to Hatiya island from Dhaka and Chattogram, and boats also cross from the Noakhali mainland. From Hatiya, another river crossing takes you to Nijhum Dwip.
Rickshaws and CNGs serve Maijdee and Chowmuhani. On Hatiya, motorbikes and CNGs are the main transport; on Nijhum Dwip you mostly walk or ride pillion, and can take a boat along the forest creeks.
Maijdee has simple and mid-range hotels. Nijhum Dwip has a few basic resorts and cottages with limited power and facilities, so arrange ahead.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

A three-domed Mughal mosque built in 1741–42 at Bajra village in Sonaimuri, on raised ground on the west bank of a large tank. The district's best-known historic building.
An ashram and memorial museum at Jayag in Sonaimuri marking Mahatma Gandhi's 1946 visit to Noakhali after the riots. The trust also runs rural development work.

An island grown from silt in the Meghna estuary south of Hatiya, declared a national park in 2001. Thousands of spotted deer live in the keora forest — wait quietly at the forest edge at dawn or dusk to see them. In winter, flocks of migratory birds settle on the mudflats.
Boat travel in the Meghna estuary depends on the weather — don't board when warnings are up or the boat is overloaded, and wear a life jacket. On Nijhum Dwip, you can get caught on the mudflats by the rising tide; don't go deep into the forest without a local guide. Mobile coverage and medical help are limited on the island.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Getting to Nijhum Dwip takes a lot of time, so allow at least two nights.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
