Boats and water
Around boats and water, life jackets and the weather forecast matter most.
- Wear a life jacket, with child sizes for children.
- Don't board overloaded or unsound boats.
- Check weather and water warnings; cancel if a storm is coming.

Kushtia, on the Padma and Gorai rivers, is often called the cultural capital of Bengal. Lalon Shah's shrine at Chheuriya, Tagore's Kuthibari at Shilaidaha and Mir Mosharraf Hossain's birthplace at Lahinipara are all close together. Do not leave without a packet of tiler khaja.

About the seasons: Lalon's death anniversary in October and the Dol Purnima full moon in March bring big gatherings at Chheuriya, with Baul songs late into the night. The winter months are comfortable for sightseeing.
Several Dhaka–Khulna trains pass through Poradah or Bheramara in the district, and some stop at Kushtia Court station.
Direct buses run from Dhaka, with good road links to Rajshahi, Jashore and Khulna.
The nearest airport is at Jashore.
Chheuriya is a short rickshaw or easy-bike ride from town. Shilaidaha and Lahinipara are in Kumarkhali upazila, easiest covered together by hiring an auto-rickshaw.
Kushtia town has hotels at several levels. Rooms fill fast during the Lalon festivals, so book ahead.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

The tomb and akhra of the Baul mystic Lalon Shah at Chheuriya, with a museum and auditorium beside it. Bauls sing here on ordinary days too, and thousands gather during the festivals.
The birthplace of Mir Mosharraf Hossain, author of Bishad Sindhu, at Lahinipara in Kumarkhali, with a memorial centre. It is an easy stop on the way to Shilaidaha.

The Tagore family's estate house at Shilaidaha in Kumarkhali, where Rabindranath lived and wrote for long spells. It is now a museum set among gardens and a pond.

A small two-storey house in Kushtia town associated with Tagore, now preserved — an easy stop if you are in town.
Sweet
A crisp sweet of sesame with sugar or jaggery and Kushtia's best-known food; it received geographical indication (GI) status in 2023.
Watch your phone and wallet in the Lalon festival crowds and keep children close. The Padma and Gorai run strong in the monsoon; ask for a life jacket if you take a boat.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
