ঝিনাইদহ
Jhenaidah is flat farming country, but it hides Sultanate-era mosques, temples from the zamindari days and one enormous banyan tree. The excavated mosques of Barobazar in Kaliganj, the Naldanga temples and the memorial to Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman in Maheshpur make it a district for slow exploring.

About the seasons: Winter makes walking between open archaeological sites comfortable, and date jaggery is in season. Summers are very hot.
Direct buses run from Dhaka, and Jhenaidah sits on the road junction between Kushtia, Jashore and Khulna.
The district town has no station; use Kotchandpur or Jashore and continue by bus.
The nearest airport is at Jashore.
Local buses run from town to Kaliganj, Shailkupa and Maheshpur. The Barobazar mosques are spread out, so hiring an easy-bike for the round is easiest.
Jhenaidah town has simple hotels; for more choice, stay in Jashore and visit for the day.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

A cluster of Sultanate-era mosques excavated at Barobazar in Kaliganj. Galakata Mosque stands a short walk from Jorbangla Mosque, both with brick domes in the Khan Jahan style.
A memorial museum and library in Khordo Khalishpur, Maheshpur — the home village of Liberation War hero Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman.
A banyan at Bethuli–Mallikpur in Kaliganj whose aerial roots have spread over a huge area; it is often cited as one of the largest banyan trees in Asia.
An old landlord's mansion on the Nabaganga river near Jhenaidah town. The building is worn, but the riverside is pleasant for a late-afternoon walk.
A group of temples founded by the Naldanga zamindar family at Naldanga in Kaliganj, dating back to the seventeenth century. Several still stand; others are in ruins.

An old multi-domed mosque near the Kumar river in Shailkupa upazila, built in the Sultanate style.
Local produce
As across greater Jashore, winter date sap here is boiled down into jaggery and patali.
The district is generally safe. Buses and trucks are fast on the highways, so take care on easy-bikes. Maheshpur runs along the border; keep away from the border line itself.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
