Boats and water
Around boats and water, life jackets and the weather forecast matter most.
- Wear a life jacket, with child sizes for children.
- Don't board overloaded or unsound boats.
- Check weather and water warnings; cancel if a storm is coming.
গোপালগঞ্জ
A low-lying district of the Madhumati, Kumar and countless canals and beels. The mausoleum of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara and the Matua pilgrimage centre at Orakandi in Kashiani are its best-known sites. In the monsoon, the beels of Kotalipara are farmed on floating vegetable beds.

About the seasons: Winter into early spring is comfortable, and the Baruni fair at Orakandi falls around February–March. To see floating farming, go in the monsoon or autumn while the beels are full.
Since the Padma Bridge opened, buses from Dhaka via Bhanga to Gopalganj and Tungipara have become much quicker and simpler.
A rail line reaches Gopalganj via Kashiani, but services are few; check what currently runs before you plan around it.
Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws in town, local buses and CNGs between upazilas. In the monsoon, boats are the way into villages in the beels.
Gopalganj town has simple and mid-range hotels; options in Tungipara are limited.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

The red-ceramic and marble mausoleum at Tungipara over the graves of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his parents, opened in 2001. The grounds include a library, an exhibition and the family's ancestral home.
The birthplace at Orakandi, Kashiani, of Harichand Thakur, founder of the Matua faith, and his son Guruchand Thakur. The complex has more than ten temples and two sacred tanks, Kamona Sagar and Dudh Sagar.
Gopalganj has seen political tension at times, so check recent news before travelling. On small boats in the beels during the monsoon, carry a life jacket if you can't swim. At big religious fairs, agree a meeting point in case you get separated in the crowd.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
