Forest
Forests often have little signal and may have wildlife.
- Respect wildlife; don't approach or feed animals.
- Stay on designated paths.
- Follow rangers' and guides' instructions.
গাজীপুর
Just north of Dhaka, Gazipur mixes factories with sal forest. Bhawal National Park and the safari park are familiar weekend escapes for Dhaka families, and the district also has the Bhawal Rajbari in Joydebpur and writer Humayun Ahmed's Nuhash Polli. Its jackfruit is well known too.

About the seasons: Winter is the season for forest walks and picnics. The monsoon makes the forest greenest, and June–July is jackfruit season, but the earth paths inside turn muddy.
Plenty of buses run up the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway via Mohakhali and Uttara. The Tongi–Gazipur stretch is notoriously jammed, so leave at dawn.
Joydebpur is a major rail junction where many trains from Dhaka to the north and Mymensingh stop.
With your own or a hired car, it is easy to combine Bhawal National Park and the safari park in one day.
Places along the highway are reachable by local bus and CNG auto-rickshaw. For spots further in, such as Nuhash Polli, a CNG or car is easier.
It works as a day trip from Dhaka. There are many resorts near the highway and the sal forest, and they fill up early for weekends.

The best-known sal forest near Dhaka, with walking paths, lakes and picnic spots; early mornings are good for birdwatching.
The 19th-century palace of the Bhawal zamindars in Joydebpur, famous for the 'Bhawal Sannyasi' case. It now houses government offices, so it is usually seen from outside.

A large safari park in the sal forest of Sreepur (formerly Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park). Besides the drive-through section with tigers, lions and deer, there are aviaries and walking areas.

The garden estate at Pirujali created by writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed, where he is also buried. Its trees, sculptures and pond make it a pilgrimage of sorts for his readers.
Fruit
Gazipur jackfruit has geographical indication (GI) status. Around Sreepur and Kapasia, roadside stalls pile them high in June and July.
The Dhaka–Mymensingh highway combines heavy jams with fast buses — cross carefully. Stay in a group in quiet parts of the forest and leave before dusk. The safari park and national park get very crowded on holidays.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
