রাঙ্গামাটি
Rangamati is the country's largest district by area, and much of it is Kaptai Lake. The town is spread across hills and water, so getting around mostly means boats — to the hanging bridge, Rajban Vihara and Shuvolong falls. As the seat of the Chakma Raja, it offers a close look at hill culture. Sajek Valley is administratively part of this district too.

About the seasons: October to February is comfortable and the lake is calm. Shuvolong falls run mainly in and just after the monsoon and are nearly dry by late winter. Water levels swing a lot: by the end of the dry season the lake shrinks and boat routes change, while in heavy monsoons the hanging bridge has gone under water.
Direct buses run from Dhaka, mostly overnight, and there are regular buses from Chattogram.
There is no railway into Rangamati. Take the train to Chattogram and continue by bus.
The nearest airport is Shah Amanat International in Chattogram.
CNGs get around town. For the lake, hire an engine boat for the day from Reserve Bazar or the tourism ghat — easy to split in a group. Sajek is a long way from Rangamati town by road and is usually reached via Khagrachhari and Dighinala.
Town has simple to mid-range hotels, including a government tourism motel, some on the lakeshore; there are options towards Kaptai too. Sajek has many cottages and resorts, but a major fire in early 2025 destroyed many of them — check the current situation before you go.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

The country's largest artificial lake, created when the Kaptai dam was built on the Karnaphuli in the 1960s; old hilltops are now islands. Tens of thousands of people, many of them Chakma, lost their homes to it — knowing that history changes how you see it.

A national park in Kaptai upazila declared in 1999, with tall old trees including teak planted in the nineteenth century. It is relatively close to Chattogram on the Kaptai road and good for birdwatching.

One of the country's leading Buddhist monasteries, near the Chakma Raja's palace. Thousands come from far away for the annual Kathin Chibar Dan ceremony.

A long suspension bridge across an arm of the lake at the tourism complex — Rangamati's best-known image. It gets crowded, but the late-afternoon light over the water is lovely.

The ridge-top villages of Ruilui and Konglak in Sajek union, Baghaichhari, at about 1,800 feet. It is administratively in Rangamati but reached from Khagrachhari via Dighinala. People come for sunrise above the clouds, so holidays are crowded and noisy.

A waterfall dropping from the hills to the lakeshore in Barkal upazila, reached by boat from town. The steep, forested hills lining the route are as much of a draw as the falls.
Dish
A hill dish made with tender bamboo shoots, most common in the rainy season. Look for it at the hill-food restaurants in town.
Wear a life jacket on Kaptai Lake, avoid overloaded boats and stay ashore in stormy weather — sudden winds can whip up mid-lake. Monsoon landslides have killed people in Rangamati, so avoid hill roads during heavy rain. Mobile coverage is weak in remote upazilas.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
When hiring a boat, agree every stop and how long you will spend at each before you leave.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
