Boats and water
Around boats and water, life jackets and the weather forecast matter most.
- Wear a life jacket, with child sizes for children.
- Don't board overloaded or unsound boats.
- Check weather and water warnings; cancel if a storm is coming.

Gaibandha is where the Teesta meets the Brahmaputra–Jamuna. Phulchhari has the Teesta's mouth, Balashighat is a ferry ghat on the Jamuna, and the char life along the rivers is the main draw. Towards Gobindaganj there are a few old zamindar houses.

About the seasons: November to March is the dry season, when the chars are exposed and travel is easier. December and January are cold and foggy. June to September is flood and erosion time, when char routes become unreliable.
Direct buses run from Dhaka to Gaibandha town via the Jamuna Bridge and the Bogura–Rangpur road.
Gaibandha is on the rail network of the northern towns with intercity services. Check schedules beforehand.
Jamuna chars are reached by boat or ferry. In the monsoon, ask locals about conditions first.
Rickshaws and e-bikes run in Gaibandha town. Local buses and CNG auto-rickshaws serve the upazilas.
Gaibandha town has basic hotels; upazilas have few. Rangpur or Bogura also work as bases.
This is general guidance on the kinds of stay available, not a recommendation of specific hotels. Check and book for yourself before you go.

A ghat and ferry point on the Jamuna in Phulchhari. A place to sit by the river and watch ferries and boats.
A remnant of an old zamindar house in Gobindaganj upazila. Together with the Bamondanga zamindar house nearby it shows the area's zamindari era.
In Phulchhari upazila the Teesta joins the Brahmaputra–Jamuna. Winter brings sandbars and a wide sky, and you can go by boat past the chars.
Sweet
A milk-based sweet in sugar syrup, said to be one of Gaibandha's well-known sweets. Ask at the town's sweet shops.
Gaibandha's chars go under in the monsoon and erosion risk is high, so avoid them from June to September. Wear a life jacket on boats and stay off the river if a storm is forecast. Winter brings fog and cold; take care on the roads.

Practical tips, not rules. Customs vary by person and place, so watch what people around you do, ask when unsure, and use your own judgement.
Take a local companion or guide for any char visit.
Keep plenty of small notes. Cash is still the norm at village shops, tea stalls and on rickshaws.
Why: Change for large notes is often hard to find.
In towns many places accept bKash or Nagad, but do not rely on it in remote areas. Ask before you order or ride.
Why: Mobile payments stall wherever the network drops.
Withdraw the cash you need before leaving the district town. ATMs thin out in rural areas.
Agree the fare before you get into a CNG, rickshaw, van or boat: the trip out, the return and any waiting time. In bigger cities where ride apps work, they are an option too.
Why: Arguing about the fare afterwards leaves you with no bargaining power.
Buy long-distance bus tickets at the operator's counter and arrive a little before departure. On overnight buses keep a small bag within reach.
Launch, ferry and trawler timings shift with tides, weather and fog. Check at the ghat or with the boatman the day before.
Why: If the last boat has gone, there may be no way back that day.
Buses, trains and launches are packed around Eid. If you can, plan around those days.
