Their journey
Ueli Steck was a Swiss mountaineer, aged 40 when he died. He twice won the Piolet d'Or, including for a solo ascent of the south face of Annapurna. In April 2017 he was acclimatising in Nepal for an attempt on Everest's West Ridge and Lhotse without supplementary oxygen. He fell while climbing alone on Nuptse. His family asked the media not to speculate about the exact circumstances.
Their love for travel
He climbed for the discipline of preparation and the quiet of high places, and inspired many climbers to train carefully and respect the mountain.
